Charla: The Face of Emotion: A computational model of the production and visual perception of facial expression of emotion

Día:   Miércoles 20 de diciembre Lugar: H-1002 Hora:  11:00 Title: The Face of Emotion: A computational model of the production and visual perception of facial expression of emotion Abstract: We now have computer vision algorithms that can successfully detect low-level image features (such as, edges), recover the 3D structure and motion of objects, and provide a semantic label for them (e.g., a face, or John’s face). But how about higher level, abstract concepts like emotions? This talk will introduce the first algorithms to successfully identify the emotion categories people regularly use to communicate emotion. I will first summarize our research uncovering the image features used by the human visual system to recognize emotion in faces. I will then explain how these results can be used to define computer vision systems that can work “in the wild” (i.e., outside controlled, in-lab conditions). In doing so, I will show the novel finding that people regularly use more than 35 distinct facial expressions (not the six propound by Darwin). We will see that the major problem in computer vision is that of landmark detection, not recognition, as is typical of most modern systems. Bio: Aleix M. Martinez is a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at The Ohio State University (OSU), where he is the founder and director of the Computational Biology and Cognitive Science Lab. He is also affiliated with the Department of Biomedical Engineering and the Center for Cognitive and Brain Sciences, where he is a member of the executive committee. Aleix has served as an associate editor of several major journals devoted to vision and affect (PAMI, TAC, CVIU) and area chair for many top conferences (CVPR, ICCV). Resultado de la elección de delegado y subdelegado (result of student delegate election)

Tras la votación efectuada el pasado miércoles, el delegado de alumnos del Máster U. en Inteligencia Artificial es Nikolas Bernaola Álvarez y la subdelegada es Patricia Martín Chozas. Cambio de horario de 4 asignaturas próximas dos semanas (timetabling changes during the next two weeks)

Las dos próximas semanas se realizarán los siguientes cambios en los horarios de 4 asignaturas: El jueves 5 de Octubre de 15:00 a 17:00 se impartirá clase de Modelos de Razonamiento, mientras que el miercoles 11 de Octubre de 17:00 a 19:00 se impartirá clase de Aprendizaje Automatico. El jueves 5 de Octubre de 17:00 a 19:00 se impartirá clase de Ingenieria Ontológica, mientras que el martes 10 de Octubre de 17:00 a 19:00 se impartirá clase de Redes Bayesianas.   The following changes will be carried out the next two weeks regarding the timetabling of four courses:  "Models of reasoning" will be taught on October 5th, Thursday, from 15:00 to 17:00, whereas "Machine learning" will be taught on October 11th, Wednesday, from 17:00 to 19:00 . Conferencia "The Web of Things for Semantic Interoperability"

El viernes 15 de septiembre el Investigador Matthias Kovatsch del ETH Zurich impartirá una Conferencia en el CEDINT titulada “The Web of Things for Semantic Interoperability”. Esta conferencia es de gran interés para todos los que trabajáis / investigais / innovais en temas relacionados con Internet of Things / Web of Things. For this, the W3C WoT Working Group is currently standardizing technological building blocks identified as being key to realizing the Web of Things: The WoT Thing Description provides a framework for semantic vocabularies to describe the data and interaction models exposed to applications, the choice of communications patterns provided by protocols, and the serialization formats used by individual IoT platforms. The WoT Scripting API provides a platform-independent application-facing API to implement IoT applications similar to Web applications running in a browser. The WoT Binding Templates provide the link to specific IoT platforms by defining a re-usable mapping between application-level interaction and low-level protocol operations. Overall, this is a step toward semantic interoperability in the IoT by building on well-known patterns from the Web and being descriptive rather than prescriptive. *Bio:* Matthias Kovatsch is a Senior Research Scientist at Siemens Corporate Technology and a Research Associate at ETH Zurich with a focus on Web technology for networked embedded systems. He is the creator of the Eclipse Californium (Cf) CoAP framework, Contiki’s Erbium (Er) REST Engine, and the Copper (Cu) Firefox add-on. With his interest in building a Web of Things around resource-constrained devices, large-scale distributed systems, and RESTful environments, he is active as an IoT Directorate member of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) and a co-chair of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Web of Things Interest Group as well as Working Group.
